Commas in Series, Dates, and Addresses

​Commas In a Series - ​(Punctuating a List):

When writing a sentence with a list of three or more items, you should put a comma between each item in that list. Otherwise, you might end up with a strange sentence.

We use commas when writing dates and addresses:
  1. DATES:
    1. September 3, 2019 (comma after the date)
    2. On Tuesday, September 3, 2019, students will return to school. (commas after the day, the date, and the year)
  2. ADDRESSES:
    1. Hodges Manor Elementary School
      1201 Cherokee Road
      Portsmouth, VA 23701

      (comma after the city)
    2. Please send your written request to to Taylor Smith, 354 E. Westward Street, Portsmouth, VA, 23702.
      (In a sentence, use a comma after the name, street, city, and state.)
    3. I have lived in Portsmouth, Virginia, for four years. 
      (Comma after city and state)
